Lip Gloss

Updated: May 24, 2020

Did reading about liquid lipsticks practically make your lips feel dry? Then you will probably enjoy this post a lot more. Time to talk about shiny, juicy lip glosses!

Lip gloss was one of my earliest makeup products. Besides the Lip Smackers that I began collecting at the ripe age of 3, lip glosses were my first real lip product that I wore out in public. I particularly remember wearing lip gloss every day in middle school. My friends would jokingly sing Lil Mama's "Lip Gloss" as I reapplied it after lunch on a daily basis. Yes, I was always the most makeup-obsessed of my friends.

Lip gloss is so simple and I think that's why a lot of people love it. Glosses tend to be sheer, so you don't have to be super precise with your application. It gives your lips a finish more than it does a color. Clear glosses or light nude glosses barely show any color; they just make your lips look plump and shiny. Don't get me wrong, many glosses give you a ton of color, but if you want a sheer option, glosses are the way to go.

If you have long hair, just beware of windy days when you're wearing gloss. Having your hair stuck in your glossy lips is never fun but trust me it will happen!

Here are some glosses I've tried:

Bobbi Brown Lip Gloss, Clear ($23): Not the best gloss I've used because it's a little sticky

Bonne Bell Liplites, Strawberry Parfait: This gloss may not still be sold but I found mine at Harmons years ago so if you have a Harmons near you, check there. It smells so yummy, has a beautiful light pink shade, and has a smooth, non-sticky formula.

Buxom Full-On Lip Polish, Dolly ($20 for full size): A nice nude pink with a bit of shimmer. Sheer and not sticky. It has a cooling sensation but it's not uncomfortable. It also smells nice!

Gerard Cosmetics Color Your Smile Lighted Lip Gloss ($24): I don't think these are worth the price, but there’s often coupons and sales for this brand. I liked the color Shimmer of Hope but I didn’t love the Nude shade. They have a small mirror on the cap and a tiny light inside the top of the wand. I personally didn't like the light because it made it hard for me to see where I was applying the gloss. Maybe I just had it at a weird angle?

LA Girl Glazed Lip Paints ($5): Super glossy and super pigmented. They have a light peppermint smell but I liked it.

L’Oreal Extraordinaire by Colour Riche Lip Color ($9.99): Smooth and glossy and they feel good on the lips, not sticky. Very similar to Maybelline Color Elixir.

Maybelline Color Elixir ($8.99): Super glossy and they felt super moisturizing on the lips. A good amount of pigment and not sticky at all. They have a slight scent to them but it’s not bad. They do bleed a little bit though.

Signature Scarlet & Vision Violet

NYX Butter Gloss ($5): Everything a gloss should be! Smooth and not sticky, a nice amount of pigment, and they smell delicious.

NYX Cosmic Metals Lip Cream, Speed of Light ($7.50): These are stunning! They stay super metallic and glossy but actually wear pretty long on the lips.

NYX Duo Chromatic Shimmer Lip Gloss, Cocktail Party ($8): Nice, shimmery glosses with some beautiful colors. On my skin tone, this shade pretty much shows up gold/nude. Because they have two tones to them, they may look different depending on your skin tone. NYX does glosses really well and like their others, this is not sticky.

NYX Filler Instinct Plumping Lip Polish ($7): I'm not usually a fan of sparkly glosses but I love these! As far as the most frequent question I get about plumpers- "Do they really work?"- I believe these do. Am I going to look like Kylie Jenner? No. Plumpers use ingredients (menthol in this case) that actually irritate the skin a little bit in order to make your lips swell slightly and get that pouty effect. I definitely feel that with these but don't find it painful.

Sparkling Please (top/right) & New Money (bottom/left)

NYX Intense Butter Gloss, Tres Leches (discontinued): I love these just as much as the regular Butter Glosses, but they have more pigmentation, almost like a liquid lipstick with a glossy finish. This color is my favorite! Such a beautiful nude pink! (see Butter Gloss picture)

NYX Slip Tease Lip Lacquer, Undercover Babe ($7): I like the formula of these because they have a lot of pigment but don't feel heavy or sticky

Revlon Super Lustrous Lip Gloss, Super Natural ($8.49): I love this gloss and especially this shade! They’re not sticky so it feels good on the lips and has a nice amount of glossiness (not overly shiny).
